Back Pain:

Most people suffer from back pain at some point in their lives.  Millions suffer from low back pain every day.  Some back pain stems from a specific injury while other back pain occurs with no apparent injury.  Conditions that lead to low back pain include sprained ligaments, strained muscles, ruptured disks, inflamed joints, and sciatica.  Sciatica may refer pain into the buttock, hip, leg, and foot.  Dr. Martin helps diagnose the cause of the pain and determines the proper treatment to rid you of your pain.

Neck Pain:

Chiropractic adjustments align the spine and neck to alleviate neck pain.  The misalignments of the spine and other structures can impact the nervous system causing pain.  As the adjustments bring the spine back into alignment, the nervous system once again functions properly alleviating pain and other symptoms.  The neck is an area of the body that is very vulnerable to injury.  The cervical bones in the neck support the head and provide a wide range of motion.  Many times stress is placed on the neck while it is in an awkward position which results in stiffness and pain.   This may be due to sleeping with your neck at a bad angle, maintaining bad posture while reading, watching TV, or using a computer.   Neck pain may also be the result of an accident, chronic conditions, and even aging.  Keep in mind that neck pain may not resolve after only one treatment.  The number of adjustments needed varies based upon the nature of your condition and the health of your spine.

Headaches have many different causes some which may stem from physical trauma, foods, stress, environmental stimuli, etc.  They vary in frequency and intensity and may be dull and achy or throbbing.

Some headaches occur when the vertebra in the upper neck lose their normal range of motion.  As this happens the muscles attached to the base of the skull become tight and squeeze or compress the nerves feeding into the head.  The resulting pain may radiate over the top or around the head.  Stress and tension headaches occur when muscles in the neck and shoulder contract causing the vertebrae to become misaligned creating pressure on the spinal nerves resulting in pain.

Gentle Chiropractic care restores the vertebral range of motion, reducing the muscle tension and nerve compression, resulting in a reduction in pain.  Research supports chiropractic adjustments an effective treatment for migraines, tension headaches, and headaches originating in the neck.  A combination of chiropractic adjustments along with nutritional and lifestyle changes may help reduce the severity and frequency of headaches.

Whiplash is the result of a sudden extension and flexion of the neck.  Although we normally associate it with auto accidents, it may also result from sports injuries such as boxing, football, and gymnastics.  The symptoms normally include shoulder or back pain, dizziness, and headaches which may appear directly or several days after the injury.

We normally associate whiplash with car accidents.  However, you can get whiplash from sport injuries.  Whiplash may occur while snowboarding, boxing, playing football,  performing gymnastics, etc.

Whiplash obtained from a car accident may vary in severity depending on the force of the impact, the way you were seated in the car, and if you were properly restrained using a shoulder and seat belt.  Tests show that the soft tissues in your cervical spine have an injury threshold of 5 mph.  If you are involved in a rear-end car accident at 5 pmh or less, you have a lower chance of getting whiplash.  Unfortunately, most rear-end car accidents happen at speeds of between 6-12 mph.  If you’ve been in a car accident, even if you don’t feel any pain now, schedule an appointment with Dr. Martin.  If whiplash or other similar accident injuries are left untreated, they may become a chronic condition that worsens over time.
